What Mercado Hidalgo is

What Mercado Hidalgo is

Mercado Hidalgo is both a working public market and a building with cultural value in Guanajuato’s historic center. The INAH catalog places it within the Historic Monuments Zone and the UNESCO-listed Historic City of Guanajuato and Adjacent Mines.

The building’s design makes its history visible from the outside. Its façade was designed around 1908 by architect Antonio Rivas Mercado, and architect Ernesto Brunel directed construction from 1909 to 1910. Guanajuato state tourism records that construction began on January 15, 1909, and the market opened on September 16, 1910, during the centenary celebrations of Mexico’s Independence struggle.

The market has two floors, three entrances and a T-shaped plan. Its main entrance has an open arch in pink quarry stone; most of the building is iron, while the main façade is stone. A vaulted roof rises to a clock tower with four clock faces, attributed to José López. Daylight enters the metal nave through 34 windows.

For a traditional Mexican meal, look for Mercado de Gavira, the food area inside the market. A Guanajuato state tourism guide singles out enchiladas mineras, a local specialty, there. The market also has fresh produce and spices, though stall offerings can vary.
